The Challenge

The hallway bathroom in this Woodland home had a shower enclosed by framed glass panels on a tiled half wall, with diamond-set tile on the walls and a tile floor. The grout lines had darkened, the framed glass collected hard-water spots, and the half wall made the small room feel boxed in. The homeowners wanted a brighter bathroom that would be easy to keep clean.

Our Solution

We removed the framed glass enclosure, the tiled half wall and the wall tile, and rebuilt the shower with a white shower base and white acrylic wall panels. A recessed twin niche was set into the back wall, and a handheld shower on a slide bar replaced the fixed head. With the half wall and framed glass gone, a curtain rod now closes the shower and the room reads as one open space. Outside the shower we laid vinyl plank flooring and painted the bathroom walls and ceiling. Acrylic walls suit Woodland well: the city supply is moderately hard, and a smooth acrylic surface wipes clean where tile grout and framed glass show mineral spotting.

Questions About This Woodland Project

Why replace tile shower walls with acrylic in Woodland?

Woodland's water is moderately hard, about 4 grains per gallon according to the city's water quality report. Acrylic panels have no grout lines to stain and wipe clean of mineral spots, which made them a practical choice for a busy hallway bathroom.

What happened to the framed glass enclosure and half wall?

Both were removed. With the tiled half wall and framed glass gone, the shower is closed with a curtain rod, which opens up the small room and removes the metal track that used to collect hard-water deposits.

Is vinyl plank flooring a good choice for a bathroom?

Yes, when it is a waterproof luxury vinyl plank. It resists standing water, feels warmer underfoot than tile, and has no grout to clean. It was laid through the whole bathroom in this Woodland remodel.
