Why Steam Showers Are Worth Building Right

A well-built steam shower is one of the most-used luxury features we install. Homeowners who plan a steam shower carefully — generator sized correctly, enclosure properly sealed, controls placed thoughtfully — typically use it 3 to 5 times per week and report daily-life improvements: muscle recovery after exercise, respiratory comfort during cold and allergy seasons, sleep support, and the simple value of a 20-minute decompression at the end of a long day.

A poorly-built steam shower is one of the most regretted bathroom features. Undersized generators that struggle to maintain temperature, enclosures that leak vapor and damage adjacent walls, controls placed inconveniently, and waterproofing standards inadequate for daily steam exposure — all common failures in projects executed by general contractors who install steam showers occasionally rather than regularly.

We install steam showers as part of our luxury master bathroom remodel work in the Sacramento area. The technical execution — generator sizing, electrical service, enclosure sealing, ventilation, controls integration — determines whether the steam shower delivers the daily experience homeowners imagine when they invest in it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a steam shower installation cost in Sacramento?+

Steam shower installation in the Sacramento area typically runs $18,000 to $45,000+ depending on enclosure size, generator capacity, and feature scope. The cost premium over a comparable non-steam tile shower is approximately $5,500 to $12,000, driven by: steam generator equipment ($1,800-$5,500), full enclosure sealing requirements, electrical service for the generator (240V dedicated circuit), additional ventilation, integrated controls, and the slightly more demanding waterproofing standard required for daily steam exposure.

What's the difference between a steam shower and a regular shower?+

A steam shower has a sealed enclosure (full ceiling, full-height walls, sealed door) that retains steam produced by a dedicated steam generator. The generator (typically 6-12 kW for residential applications) heats water in a tank and injects steam through a wall-mounted steam head. Regular showers do not retain steam meaningfully — the open ceiling and standard glass doors allow steam to escape. A steam shower can also function as a regular shower for daily use; the steam mode is a separate operation activated through a control panel.

How big does a bathroom need to be for a steam shower?+

The shower itself needs to be at least 36×36 inches with a sealed ceiling no taller than 8 feet for the generator capacity to maintain steam temperature efficiently. Larger showers (up to 60×72 inches) require larger generators (9-12 kW vs. 6-7.5 kW for smaller). The bathroom around the steam shower needs adequate ventilation — a properly-sized exhaust fan rated for the bathroom volume — and a dedicated 240V electrical circuit running to the generator location (typically located in an adjacent closet, attic, or basement within 25 feet of the steam shower).

What steam generator brand do you recommend?+

We primarily install Mr. Steam (MS Series, eSeries) and ThermaSol (Pro and Studio Series) generators in residential applications. Both are reliable, well-supported by parts and service, and offer a range of capacities from 6 kW (small enclosures) to 14 kW (large luxury installations). Mr. Steam tends toward simpler, more conservative designs with deep parts availability; ThermaSol tends toward more advanced control integration including app-based remote start. We recommend based on installation scenario — both are quality choices.

What features can be added to a steam shower?+

Common additions include: aromatherapy injection (essential oil scent diffused with steam), chromatherapy lighting (color-changing LED accent lighting), audio system integration (waterproof speakers connected to home audio), rain showerhead overhead, body sprays at multiple heights, handheld showerhead, integrated bench seating with custom tile or solid surface, and smart control panels with app-based pre-heat and scheduling. A fully-featured steam shower with all upgrades runs $30,000-$60,000+ installed.

How long does a steam shower take to install?+

Steam shower installation typically takes 3 to 5 weeks from demolition start to commissioning. The timeline includes: demolition and rough-in of plumbing and electrical (3-5 days), substrate and waterproofing (2-3 days), tile installation (5-8 days), grout and curing (2 days), generator installation and electrical commissioning (1-2 days), glass templating-and-fabrication (10-14 day off-site fabrication), and glass installation plus final commissioning (1-2 days). The generator and controls are tested through a complete cycle before homeowner handoff.

How is a steam shower waterproofed differently than a regular shower?+

Steam showers require waterproofing on every surface that contacts steam, including the ceiling. Standard shower waterproofing covers walls and floor; steam shower waterproofing extends to the ceiling and to the inside of the steam shower door (the splash zone of condensed steam can reach door interior surfaces). We use Schluter KERDI-BOARD or KERDI sheet membrane on all six interior surfaces of the steam enclosure, with extra attention to corner sealing and the steam-head penetration. The enclosure must be sealed against vapor migration to wall framing — vapor barrier integrity is more critical in steam showers than in standard tile showers.

Can I add steam to my existing tile shower?+

Sometimes, but it requires an enclosure that is or can be modified to be fully sealed (full ceiling, full-height walls). Most existing residential showers were built without ceilings — they have standard 8-foot bathroom ceilings above an open shower opening. Adding steam to such a shower requires building a new tile-over-tile or new-construction ceiling on the shower, sealing the door perimeter, and possibly upgrading the door to a steam-rated full-height design. Cost for adding steam to an existing well-built tile shower is typically $8,000-$16,000; if the existing shower needs significant modifications it may be more cost-effective to remove and rebuild.

Are steam showers worth the investment?+

For homeowners who genuinely use them, yes. The therapeutic benefits — improved circulation, muscle relaxation, respiratory comfort, sleep support — are well-documented and many users report daily-life improvements. The resale return is strongest in luxury homes ($1M+) where steam showers are an expected master bathroom feature; in mid-market homes the return is more modest. For homeowners committed to using a steam shower 3+ times per week, the investment pays off in quality of life. For occasional use only, the maintenance overhead and operating cost may not justify the upfront expense.

How much electricity does a steam shower use?+

A 6 kW steam generator running for a 30-minute steam session uses approximately 3 kWh of electricity. At Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) residential rates of approximately $0.18-$0.26 per kWh (2026), each session costs $0.55-$0.78 in electricity. Three sessions per week is approximately $86-$122 per year. Steam shower operating cost is modest compared to similar luxury features (heated pools, hot tubs) and well below what most homeowners assume.

What maintenance does a steam shower require?+

Generator maintenance is minimal: most modern units (Mr. Steam, ThermaSol) have automatic flush cycles that drain accumulated mineral deposits after each session. Annual generator inspection is recommended — checking the heating element, flush valve, and electrical connections. Sacramento's hard water requires flushing the generator more often than soft-water markets; we recommend monthly manual flushes in addition to the automatic cycles. The shower interior maintenance is identical to any tile shower: weekly squeegee, monthly cleaning, annual caulk inspection. Steam-specific concerns are limited to ensuring the door seals continue to function over time.

Can I have a steam shower in a curbless shower design?+

Yes, with careful engineering. The curbless threshold creates a vapor escape route at the floor that needs to be addressed for steam efficiency. Solutions include a slight curb or threshold (1-2 inches) that maintains accessibility while improving steam containment, a steam-rated lower door seal sweeping to the floor, and oversized generator capacity to compensate for some vapor loss. We have installed several curbless steam showers in Sacramento luxury homes — the design works but requires deliberate engineering.
