The Challenge

The master bath in this El Dorado Hills home had a framed shower stall with a tiled half wall on one side and a vanity run on the other. The stall was small for a master suite and the framed glass and beige tile dated the room. The homeowners wanted a bigger, brighter shower with two heads and a finish that felt like natural stone without the upkeep.

Our Solution

We took the stall down to the framing and enlarged the shower footprint. The walls are large-format travertine-look porcelain, with a full-height herringbone marble accent wall and a recessed niche lined in the same marble. Two shower stations were installed, a fixed rain head and a handheld on a slide bar, and a brushed nickel grab bar was set into blocking beside the entry. A frameless glass enclosure replaced the framed door.

Questions About This El Dorado Hills Project

Is the wall tile real travertine?

No. It is a travertine-look porcelain. Real travertine is porous and needs regular sealing in a shower, while porcelain gives the same warm banded look with no sealing and easier cleaning.

Why is there a grab bar in a master shower?

The homeowners asked for one at the entry so the shower stays safe to use as they age. It is anchored into solid blocking behind the tile and finished in the same brushed nickel as the shower trim.
