The Challenge

The homeowners wanted a shower that looked designed rather than installed: an arched entry, handmade-looking tile, warm wood tones and black fixtures. Doing that well means the arch has to be framed square and plumb before any tile goes on, and the glossy irregular tile needs careful setting so the surface reads as intentional texture rather than a rough job.

Our Solution

We framed an arched opening into the shower wall and finished it in the same tile as the interior. The walls are glossy cream zellige-style tile, laid in a stacked pattern with a recessed niche. The shower floor is a wood-look porcelain in a chevron layout, and a teak bench with a black wall sconce above it sits at the back. Matte black rain head, handheld and trim finish the shower, with a frameless glass panel at the arch. Outside the shower the bathroom floor was tiled in a diamond-set marble checkerboard.

Questions About This El Dorado Hills Project

What is zellige-style tile?

Zellige is a handmade Moroccan glazed tile with an irregular, glossy surface. Zellige-style tile reproduces that look in a more uniform, easier-to-set product. It is deliberately laid with slight variation so the wall catches light the way handmade tile does.

How is an arched shower opening built?

The arch is framed in wood and backer board before waterproofing, then tiled on both faces and the curved underside. Framing it square and plumb first matters, because any twist shows in the tile lines around the curve.

Can a wood-look tile be used on a shower floor?

Yes, when it is porcelain. This floor is a wood-look porcelain laid in a chevron pattern, which handles water like any other porcelain tile while giving the warmth of wood.
