The Challenge
The homeowners in their late 60s loved their Whitney Oaks home but their bathroom was becoming increasingly difficult to use safely. The high-sided bathtub was a fall risk, there were no grab bars anywhere, the slippery tile floor was dangerous when wet, and the standard-height toilet was hard to get up from. They wanted an accessible bathroom that looked stylish and elegant—not institutional or medical.
Our Solution
We designed and built an accessible bathroom that prioritizes safety without sacrificing style. The centerpiece is a zero-threshold curbless walk-in shower with elegant grab bars that look like intentional design elements rather than medical equipment. A fold-down teak bench seat provides comfort during showering, and the handheld shower on a slide bar accommodates different heights and positions. We installed a comfort-height toilet with a nearby grab bar, non-slip textured tile flooring throughout, lever-handle faucets for easy operation, and improved lighting to reduce fall risk.
